Competency #3: Problem Solving Skills
The focus of this core competency is developing the behaviors, mental skills, emotional mindsets and specific processes needed to increase proficiency in solving simple and more complex open-ended problems in the classroom, the workplace and everyday situations. These are the portable skills that everyone needs to manage problems big or small. This competency addresses the following elements:
- Seven common problem-solving mistakes: what the most common errors are and how to overcome them to get better results in and out of school.
- How to set outcomes for a problem solving process: a simple framework for determining intended results for open-ended problems.
- How to use the 8 smart track processes: the generic problem solving sequences and when to use each one.
- How to build your own problem solving process: use the core SmartSkills building blocks and strategies to develop customized processes, based on the problem faced and the outcome required.
How to switch behaviors and thinking strategies at each phase of the process: switch how you operate to have success in each phase of the problem solving process. |
